Provincial News

The Province is removing 8% provincial portion of HST from purpose built rental housing for projects that began construction after Sept. 14, 2023. The Ministers of Finance and Municipal Affairs and Housing made the announcement on November 1: "The removal of the provincial portion of the HST would apply to new purpose-built rental housing such as apartment buildings, student housing and senior residences built specifically for long-term rental accommodation, that meet the criteria. The enhanced rebate would apply to qualifying projects that begin construction between September 14, 2023 and December 31, 2030, and complete construction by December 31, 2035."

The Province has filed a regulation granting strong mayor powers to 18 new municipalities. This is the second time the list of municipalities with these powers has been extended and brings the total to 46.

Intact Public Entities (IPE) has announced a new partnership with Natural Assets Initiative (NAI) to sponsor the Natural Asset Management Roadmap Program for municipalities in Ontario and Atlantic Canada. The program led by NAI, provides direction, support and guidance to local governments as they develop high-level plans to account for nature in their asset management strategies. IPE will sponsor municipal clients to participate in this highly beneficial program.

With municipalities in Ontario having to be compliant with O. Reg. 588/17, Asset Management Planning for Municipal Infrastructure, as well as minimum standards set out by CSA W218, Specifications for natural asset inventories, this program aims to help municipalities understand and manage the dynamic process of accounting for natural assets through participation in the program.

The Natural Asset Management Roadmap Program is now accepting applications. Interested local governments can fill out the Expression of Interest form on the IPE website.

A Word from the IESO

Skipperisms

We are learning from our mistakes, we are mourning our vanished kin, and we now build a new politics of hope.
We respect and uphold the absolute need for clean air, water and soil.
We see that economic activities that benefit the few while shrinking the inheritance of many are wrong.
And since environmental degradation erodes biological capital forever, full ecological and social cost must enter all equations of development.
We are one brief generation in the long march of time; the future is not ours to erase.
So where knowledge is limited, we will remember all those who will walk after us, and err on the side of caution.

All this that we know and believe must now become the foundation of the way we live.
At this turning point in our relationship with Earth, we work for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity, to interdependence.
