The CAO Profile Online Series

Township of Rideau Lakes

The Township of Rideau Lakes is located in the northwest corner of United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, is part of the Southeastern Ontario Tourism Region (RTO9), and is geographically the largest municipality in the county. Position: Chief Executive Officer, Brant Municipal Enterprises. Reporting to the Board of Directors of Brant Municipal Enterprises, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for exercising general control and management of the affairs of Brant Municipal Enterprises Inc. (BME) for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective operation, and the growth and profitability of the organization.

 

Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the CEO shall have and exercise the following powers, duties, responsibilities and functions together with the power to delegate such powers, duties, responsibilities, and functions to a designated officer or other employee of BME: To provide strategic administrative and functional leadership to BME in accordance with the direction of the Board of Directors. To ensure corporate policies, programs, and initiatives approved by the Board are implemented in a timely manner having regard to BME's Mandate as outlined in its Shareholder Declaration, its Strategic Plan, and its Business Plan in effect at the time. How long have you been a member of OMAA?

15 years

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I spent my early years in Ontario’s Far North. My family moved to Red Lake when I was a young child. This is the end of the road in Ontario. Lots of bullwinkles, mosquitos, trees, rocks and lakes!

What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — you learned in the last month?

Patience is a skill developed over time. With the world changing so fast around us, especially in the municipal public sector – we need to adjust our outlook and ‘point of view” on so many fronts.

How do you define success?

I believe that societal change since COVID-19 has changed our outlook and made us reassess important things such as health and wellness, family, and empathy towards others. Success has moved from financial and wealth creation to stopping and taking time to appreciate the little things around us in our lives.

What is the next place on your travel bucket list?

i spent two weeks with my entire family touring through Italy in June. This had been on our family bucket list for over 25 years.

Do you have a book recommendation?

The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, A Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War by Malcolm Gladwell. As it states in the book description – “Malcolm Gladwell weaves together the stories of a Dutch genius, and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in central Alabama, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard to examine one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history”.

Skipperisms

Funny, but seems to be a lot of libertarians around these days.

 

Libertarians take individual freedom as the paramount political value. They believe that freedom of association and expression is the social and cultural order of a free people and the free market is the economic order of a free people. Freedom, liberty, "medical fascism". etc, etc. 

 

But these folks presuppose an unrealistic and undesirable conception of individual identity that is lonely and somewhat selfish.

 

There is so much psychological research that supports the crucial role of family, community, and the state in forming individual identity and contributing to one's wellbeing. Libertarians ignore the obligations to community and government that accompany the benefits derived from these institutions. How lonely and isolating it would be if you aren't contributing to a collective.  

 

Dogs know we are all interconnected. Except maybe cats, I am not so sure about them...
