Provincial News

Premier Doug Ford shuffled his cabinet last Friday in response to former Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, Monte McNaughton's resignation. The new Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development is David Piccini. Andrea Khjanjin assumes the role of Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks. Todd McCarthy becomes Minister of Public Business and Service Delivery. Vijay Thanigasalam becomes the new Associate Minister of Transportation.  

 

OMAA welcomes the new Ministers and looks forward to working with them.

Municipal Pursuit at the Fall Workshop 

 

A new feature this year taking place on Wednesday evening is Municipal Pursuit 

 

This Trivia challenge and Let's Make a Deal mash-up enables players to score prizes--some fabulous, some not so much.

 

Our host Municipality of Chatham-Kent CAO Michael Duben will guide us through the Kahoot Rounds while Michelle Stephens from Granicus will be our modern day Monty Hall as winners pick from prizes behind closed doors. 

 

All you'll need to play is your phone as we will use the Kahoot platform to play.

All other OMAA members can participate in this program as mentees simply by creating a login and booking time with one of the mentors. This program helps mentees gain career-enhancing knowledge and insights on career paths they are following or may be considering.

 

Your email had already been pre-loaded. After booking sessions, each mentee can log in 24/7 on the mentorship website to view a personalized summary page called ‘My Sessions’.  This page stores all the information from the mentee’s bookings: selected mentors, the meeting dates, and the mentors’ authorized contact information. The Township of Rideau Lakes is located in the northwest corner of United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, is part of the Southeastern Ontario Tourism Region (RTO9), and is geographically the largest municipality in the county. What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I have a first-degree black belt in Karate. Our whole family studied martial arts together when our boys were in grade school and high school, and we all achieved the rank of first-degree black belt.

What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — you learned in the last month?

The importance of maintaining brain health – focus on diet, exercise and sleep for brain health and your mind, body and spirit will be the primary beneficiaries!

What do you love most about the municipal sector?

That it is a high-touch government service. While we sometimes gripe about citizen complaints and inquiries, this is outweighed by the wide range of opportunities to work with the community to improve livability.

What do you define success?

Coming back to the Karate training, the 7 principles of  Black Belt are: Honesty, Integrity, Courtesy, Humility, Courage, Perseverance and Indomitable Spirit. In my opinion, if you are living within these principles, you have found success.

What is the next place on your travel bucket list?

Slovakia – the birthplace of my parents. I am looking forward to seeing their homeland and experiencing the mountains, forests, cities and castles of this country – oh, and the food too!

Do you have a book recommendation?

Drive, by Daniel Pink (2009) explains the three elements that motivate us in the context of an inter-generational workplace. The 3 elements?  Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose. Delivered in upbeat prose that lends itself well to an audiobook - it will keep you entertained while you ‘drive’ for hours?

Fall is finally here!

 

Leaves, colours, cooler weather, and no bugs. Make no wonder it is my favourite time of the year. I am reminded of Robert Frost's October:

 

Hearts not averse to being beguiled,

Beguile us in the way you know.

Release one leaf at break of day;

At noon release another leaf;

One from our trees, one far away.

Retard the sun with gentle mist;

Enchant the land with amethyst.

Slow, slow!

 

Ontario has a lot to offer this season. So get out there and pick some apples, grab a pumpkin, or hike through a multi-hued forest. And don't forget to pack some treats in case you run into me or one of my friends.
