Hello again my friends and welcome to March. March sits on the fence between winter and spring, a month that can’t decide which world it belongs to. One day, the snow melts into rivulets racing along the curbs; the next, a cold front reminds you that nature is in no hurry to keep our calendars. I know this can be extra tricky for you folks trying to keep our streets clear of snow and prevent our rivers from flooding. John Steinbeck reminds us, “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” March is our cue that contrast gives life its texture. Without struggle, beauty loses its sharpness. Without a little lingering cold, the first buds of April would feel ordinary.
In “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star,” Friedrich Nietzsche points out ho beauty often arises from turmoil. March carries that generative chaos and provides lots of uneasy energy before creation.
So don’t curse the whiplash of seasons because the weather doesn’t owe you stability. Lace up the boots and keep your optimism folded in your coat pocket. |
