Skipperism

Like the fields that yield harvest only when well-tended, a society thrives not by the strength of its prosperous, but by the dignity it extends to the most vulnerable among its own.

Take inspiration from the words of American novelist and Nobel Prize winner Pearl Buck: “Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.”

Martin Luther King Jr. declaration that "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice" reminds us that the arc does not bend on its own. It is pulled by the hands willing to uplift those who cannot rise on their own. In tending to the weak, we restore balance to the moral fabric that threatens to unravel with neglect.

If you’ve ever walked the furrows of the earth, you know a field untended grows wild, yielding little but weeds. A society, too, must be cultivated—watered with compassion and turned by the plow of responsibility. And so, as the sun rises on yet another day, ask yourself: who among us needs tending? For in answering that call, we answer for ourselves, for our shared humanity.

Our worth, after all, is not measured in wealth amassed or monuments built but in the quiet, steadfast care we give to those who cannot give back. The arc of history waits, and it is in our hands to pull it toward justice.

Performance Review Time? Why not ask for more severance?

Performance reviews are more than just a formality; they provide an opportunity for city managers to showcase their achievements, outline challenges faced, and demonstrate their commitment to the community. By effectively communicating their contributions—such as improvements in city services, budget management, and community engagement—CAOs can build a compelling case for their value.

These reviews can also serve as a strategic tool for negotiating severance packages, particularly the transition from a three or six-month severance to a more favorable twelve-month term. It is common for CAOs and municipal executives to require up to a year to secure a new job so try to include this level of protection in your employment agreement.
