There’s a quiet kind of wealth in stopping to see the beauty around us. We often get tangled up in the hurry and the noise, forgetting that beauty isn’t just there to please us--it’s there to remind us of something more essential. There’s a certain sturdiness in knowing how to appreciate beauty, like looking out over a field at dusk and realizing the world is a wider place than we often give it credit for.
Aristotle once said, “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Appreciating beauty is the purest form of artistry. When we pause to find beauty in the common things— the soft hum of morning, a cup of coffee with steam rising, a woody mushroom—it’s as if we’re catching a glimpse of that “inward significance” he spoke about. It doesn’t need to be grand to have meaning, nor extravagant to bring joy.
Ralph Waldo Emerson believed that “Beauty without expression is boring.” The truth of beauty lies in feeling it, in letting it change us in some way. Emerson reminds us that beauty becomes fully alive when we respond to it. So, it’s not just about noticing the stars, but about how they stir something inside you—call it wonder, or awe, or just the need to stand there a minute longer. Kant had his thoughts on this, too, musing that “The beautiful is that which pleases without concept.” Beauty doesn’t have to mean anything profound or have any purpose. It just is.
There’s no utility to a sunset or a storm rolling in over a field, and yet these things anchor us in ways few other things can.
Appreciating beauty is not just a pastime but a reminder, a tether back to what’s real and what matters. The heart sometimes needs nothing more than a quiet moment, a little piece of the world to make it feel whole again. |

C40 Cities' Climate Action Guide for Urban Planners focuses on the preparation and policy content of urban plans – known variously as strategic spatial plans, master plans, land use plans, and more. The guide also identifies a range of planning policies from cities around the world which have been designed with specific climate considerations in mind.
The guide illustrates the importance of urban planning as a solution to rising climate challenges, with urban planners’ decisions defining cities’ capacities to meet climate goals and enhance quality of life for all residents, both now and into the future. For instance, the guide highlights how:
Increased density and efficient built form can reduce emissions from buildings Shortening distances and enabling mode-shift can reduce transport emissions
Cutting urban sprawl can help preserve natural land and its carbon sequestration potential. Controlling urban development on hazardous land can reduce exposure to climate risks |
