OMAA Issues

Last week we introduced our new Message Board. This week we'd like to showcase our new Job Board.

This enables you to post your job ad and complete payment in one single step (no more confusing invoices!).

Our service includes the posting (you set the expiry date), an email distribution to all members, as well as advertising on our LinkedIn and Twitter pages. The price is $425 for non-members or $300 for members. One more reason why it pays to be an OMAA Member.

A reminder that OMAA's Mentorship Match Up is recruiting Mentors until the end of the month.

Follow these instructions to create your profile in the MENTOR PORTAL:

1. Click: https://mentorshiprocket.com/QQv0M1ig

2. Click on ‘MENTOR PORTAL’ in the menu at the top of the site – the Login form will appear, then begin by entering this email address preloaded for you in the system.

3. Please follow the prompts to register and set a password.

4. Following that, in a few minutes a verification email will be sent to you (a security protocol). Please watch your spam folder, in case this email is directed there. It is very important to click the link in this verification email to finalize and establish your login for access to the Mentor Portal.

5. Finally, return to the mentorship site, click MENTOR PORTAL again … log in with your email address and password … then you will find your mentor profile ready for you to complete.

Your name, company name, and email address have been preloaded for you and we ask you to do the following:

A. Ensure the contact information preloaded for you is current. Insert an approximate 100?word biography in the space allowed.

B. You have the option to insert the name and email address for an alternate contact – perhaps an assistant. On the date when mentees begin booking sessions with you in the online system, this person’s contact information will be given to the mentees for the purpose of connecting and finalizing the meeting arrangements, specifically the times and locations.

C. You have the option of inserting your LinkedIn ID, so mentees who select you as a mentor can learn more about you.

D. Please select mentorship session dates (time of day is not required here) for meetings with mentees between [date range set by Admin during program setup]. We are hoping you can commit to 10 meetings during this program year.

E. Lastly, please note the categories ?? at the bottom of your online profile form. The instruction there helps you select ‘tags’ that will help mentees find you in the Mentor Gallery on the mentorship website homepage.

The winner of the third weekly prize draw is Joe Milicia CAO of LaSalle. We will have one more prize draw during mentor sign-up month (July).

Member Profile

Laurie Kennard is OMAA’s First VP and CAO of The Township of Severn.

How long have you been a member of OMAA?

10 years

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I used to be an avid half-marathon runner before an injury stopped me from running.

What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — you learned in the last month?

It is good governance for councillors to be involved in CAO appraisals and it is particularly important to ensure councillors fully understand what the role entails and that ground rules are established in advance.

Why did you become a CAO?

I had a fantastic CAO mentor that helped guide and shape my career. I aspired to be a great leader like her.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

We have built a powerhouse senior management team here in Severn. The team was in place when I started and was comprised of people new to their roles, so we have enjoyed a lot of growth together and progressed the professional management of the township collectively.

Do you have a book recommendation?

Jim Collins’ From Good to Great is a classic management text that is well worth a read. My biggest take-away was the importance of getting the right people in the right seats then empowering them to succeed.

What’s the next place on your travel bucket list?

Australia. I visited about 20 years ago and have been keen to return to see much more of that vast and beautiful country.

What’s one item you can’t live without?

My e-reader. I am a pretty voracious reader and I don’t think I could get to sleep without it!

Skipperisms

Have you been thinking about your purpose these days. I have.  I find inspiration from Aristotle when he said  “Let us presuppose this much, that the best way of life both separately for each individual and in common for cities is that accompanied by virtue—virtue that is equipped to such an extent as to allow them to take part in actions that accord with virtue.”

Governments exist to promote the virtue of their citizens. So our municipalities should be organized with this goal in mind above all others. For citizens to find happiness, they must be able to freely and openly pursue virtue. The happy life is a virtuous life and the virtuous life is a happy life. I find it easier to be virtuous when I am actively involved in my community and helping others.

Being virtuous is also good because it gets you treats. But not chicken, they never let me have chicken...
